Description

A tall ovoid blue and white jar with a short neck and a high domed cover with a flat flange and a knob finial. The main band shows two bearded figures in flowing robes, their hair and sleeves lifted by the wind, among rocks, grasses and large dotted cloud scrolls. One holds a flower spray; the other holds a small sprig in one hand and a long whip or rod in the other. A band of tall upright leaves rises from the foot. On the shoulder, cloud-collar panels enclosing peony sprays are set against a diaper ground, below a diaper band at the neck.

The cover repeats the scheme, with a phoenix with spread wings among peonies in cloud-collar panels on a diaper ground. The glaze is greyish white with a crackle. The base is flat and unglazed, showing a buff to brown body, and there is no mark. Our page on the early Ming dynasty covers the period.
